Built in 1957 by Jerome ("Slim") and Lorraine
Gariepy, it started out as just a kitchen and
café. In 1967, Slim added on the dining room,
which still exists today. They owned the
restaurant until their Son, James and wife
Alecia purchased it in 1989. Under this new
ownership, the menu remained the same but
several improvements were made in 1990 to the
structure of the restaurant to better serve
their customers, including those with
disabilities.
In 1994, the business was once again sold to an
outside party, yet the restaurant name remained
the same. Alecia worked as a secretary for six
years thereafter, until she once again had the
urge to get back into the restaurant business in
which her family has their roots.
At this time, she approached her sister in-law,
Susie Laurie about going into a partnership and
to bring Slim's Café back into the family once
again. In January of 2000, Jim and Alecia
Gariepy & Tom & Susie Laurie became owners in a
partnership of Slim's Café.
Since that time, additions to the kitchen
including a walk-in refrigerator and freezer
were added and cosmetic changes to the exterior
of the restaurant took place in 2003 which made
the restaurant completely handicap accessible.
Although there have been many changes over the
years, one thing still remains the same. First,
the menu has not changed much over the years at
all, with the exception of the addition of
pasties and their assortment of bakery items.
Everything from four types of bread including
Saffron, along with cookies, tarts, and pies all
of which are made in our own bakery.
Of course, no familiar face to Slim's Café could
not forget their always popular Sunday Turkey
Dinner! This Keweenaw tradition has remained a
favorite on Sunday for as long as many of the
regulars can remember.
With seating of up to 60 people, Slim's has also
become a popular place for private parties,
banquets, meetings and funeral luncheons. |
